Axle Defect?!?!?!

Today i was going to replace my rear wheel bearings.... one wheel was making a grinding noise while going down the road. To make a long story short, i pulled the axles out, replaced the bearings on the driver side and then on the passenger side, found that my bearings were fine, but the axle was worn about a quarter of an inch.... what the heck is goin on? isn't the axle supposed to be harder than the bearings? or is this just a factory defect that the glazing/forging process did not go right? I now need a new axle or a bearing saver if i can find one.... any help would be appreciated on where to get a new axle or how much one would be or what anyone else did for this problem.
thanks
marshall

this is another one of fords brillant ideas. i saw just a week ago or so where someone had listed the aftermarket brg kit to use when this happens. but if yours is worn that much, you might have to go looking for a new axle. it does sound like improper heat treat maybe, i've seen lots of threads on this. i have a notion to go ahead and put this brg saver kit in mine , even though i'm not having any problems, just for prevention of this. i've been a ford nut for many yrs but this kind of thing really really gets me , i'm sure it was designed to save a buck. pross.....BTW i'm curious what the other big boys are doing on this application, like GM and Dodge.)

Well... for what dodge has done, i don't know i have never heard of a dodge having a problem except for the bodies and trannies falling apart... the drivetrain other than the tranny seems to be fine... (my mom has one and its 13 yrs old and its fine to this day)... I used to have an older chevy that had the same problem as this... I just used a bearing saver on it and solved the problem... just kinda wondering where i could get them for a ford.... would my local auto store carry them??? where could i get them. Still to this day, i have always liked my ford way better than my chevy... so if someone could tell me where to find the so called bearings that would be greatly appreciated... thank you.

i'm 99% sure it was the moderator that had the no. if you have time, do a search under rear axle or whatever. if other makers also use this type of setup, then finding one at a local parts store shouldn't be a problem... just stick around for a reply.....guaranteed someone has it....paul

Most jobbers have them. They just relocate where the bearing rides on the shaft. Most have the axle seal built right in.
