I am pulling a 10k plus fifth wheel with my '03 V-10 and have the Gear Vendor to help me get over the hills with my 3.73's so I can use "2nd over"
in many grades.
Still on some steeper mountain grades straight second gear just quite isn't enough and first gear overdriven is too low to keep the engine from revving at 4 grand.
It seems to me that second gear would work a lot better if I had 4.30's and could offset their high end rpm's with the gear vendor in full od in 4th.
Gear Vendors tells me that 4 grand is anything to worry about since the V-10 works best between 3k and 4.5k rpm's. Maybe so, but I still have to refill that gas tank sooner when it's using that lower gear overdriven.
I would say definitely do it. You won't have to worry about losing MPGs since u have the over drive unit. You will get more rear wheel torque and still be able to have low enough RPMs at cruising to get good gas mileage. I wouldn't think you would want your RPMs any lower than 1750 cruising anyways.
I did, it was one of the reasons I traded trucks. My '99 had 3.73's, the '03 has 4.30's. I can honestly say I will never have another SuperDuty/Excursion without 4.30's. I tow a 7k lbs trailer and the 4.30 truck handles it noticably easier than the old truck. The '99 handles it great but you spent more time at 4000 RPM's getting it up to speed and going up grades.
The 4.30's are also more fun around town.
My 03 F250 had 3.73 from the factory. It struggled to pull my 36' toy hauler up grades. I changed to the 4.30 gears and put on a Banks powerpack, now problem now. I would definately recomend the 4.30 to anyone.
As for the 4K RPM on the V10, don't worry about it. I pull many grades running 4 - 4.5K RPM with the V10. This engine wants to rev to make power, it is happy at the higher RPM's when you work it. Now, that being said, with the 4.30 gears my truck will hold 3rd much longer than it ever did with the 3.73 and the engine seems better able to work hard at a lower RPM. Not much pentalty for gas mileage, in fact, I think it may have increased when towing, but it is down about 1 mpg not towing.
I had a 2001 V10 F250 with the 3.73s and did not like the way it towed at all...when towing in hilly and mountainous areas. Flatland towing ( I am in Kansas) with the 3.73s was OK.
I traded up to a 2002 V10 F350 with the 4.30 and the towing is now much better, both on flat ground and especially in the hills and mountains. It is not diesel strong in the mountains, but altitude is also having a negative effect on the gas non turbo engine when towing through Colorado, so gears is not all the issue.
I generally between 5000-7000 pounds on an 18 ft car hauler (the same load with the two different trucks).
I would also recommend opening up the intake and exhaust and quite possible a SuperChips tuner to maximize your V10s towing potential.
The 4.30 are a big help. Why not go 4.56s while you are doing the gear swap? If you ever plan on running larger than stock tiers the 4.56s will let you get away with a tad taller tire than the 4.30s.
Looks like I am going to make that swap thanks to ya'lls advice and experiences. Mine will cost double since it's a 4X4. About $1,250. The 4.56's are tempting but I won't be buying taller tires. I need to step up with Outlands steps as it is. Going taller would decrease my bed rail clearance between the truck the my 5th wheeler.
Superchips or someone will definately be an attractive option. I want that dang Predator, but seems if ya' ain't diesel, they won't help ya'. Just nothing yet for the V10 eventhough they say it's 'coming".
Does this change your speedo??????If so how do you change it.. I have the superchips programmer and there is no ability for change of the speedo for the excursion.
The SCMT will not change your speedo. The V10 application is not set up for recalibrating speedometers...yet.
Things that will cause your speedo to be off are taller (and shorter) than stock sized tires. Also, axle gearing changes will alter your speedo (with mechanically driven speedo gears). I am not sure if the modern electronic tone rings can compensate for gearing changes without reprogramming something in the PCM or ECM or whatever you would need to reflash/reprogram.
