Tonight I had something weird happen. I had just gotten back from towing a small trailer about 100 miles. I pulled over to let some cars pass on my street so I could back into the driveway. Upon pulling out the truck moved about 5 feet when I gave it gas, but then it kinda just died and coasted to a stop. No abnormal noise, just died and stopped moving. Popped it in neutral and she fired back up and off I went to back it in the driveway.
What would cause it to just shut off without warning, and then restart without problem?
That could have been bad if I was in an intersection and stalled halfway in the middle of the road.
Well any number of things might have happened, for us to guess would be endless.
If you want a list.
Fuel would be my first chk(fuel pressure, fuel pump)
Next would be electrical
faulty sensors
cht (cylinder head temp)
ckps (crank position sensor)
tps (throttle position sensor)
I'd scan the truck for any dtc's codes codes are stored. somtimes but don't always throw a chk enginge light right away till so many drive cycles happen.
A loose connection anywhere might cause this also.

I hooked up the laptop and it said there was no check engine light (obviously) and also said there were 0 stored codes. I am at a loss. I drove it about 10 miles today and it was fine.
I am going to be going on a 200 mile trek this coming week and don't want this thing dying on me while away from home!
Okay ,you can chk the harness connection that goes through the fire wall ,there is a 5/16 bolt I believe that holds it together. If you plan to look at it or tighten it .disconnect the battery first ,wouldn't want to short something out,
We had a person awhile ago that had intermitent problems and found that connection to be loose or a pin inside the connector wasn't seated all the way .Making poor contact with another pin.

In my case it was the TPS. The idle was not solid, and would occasionally surge. Whenever it dropped down in an intersection, it would die. Happened about 6 times in 3000 miles. None since the warranty repair.
When I had approx 5000 miles, the same thing happened. I had towed our 8K trailer to Ky. Was driving around all day without a load. It just died as I was driving. Coasted to a stop and restarted. No problem since. I now have 8K miles and have towed too. Unless it comes back again, I'd just ignore it.
Mine did this very infrequently at first, may be once every couple of months. Then more frequently until it was happening once every couple of weeks. Also began to notice an oil leak that was coming off of the eingine at the bell housing. Finally threw a code. Problem turned out to be the ICP sensor. It was cracked and leaking poil at the back of the engine which ran down tot he bottom of the bell housing. It's what was causing the internmittant stalls coming when idling down then hitting the fuel.No problems since. Replaced under warranty.
It's located towards the back of the engine and the turbo has to be removed on an 03 to get at it. Apparently this thing was moved to a more tech friendly location for the 04's. I thought they called it a crank positioning sensor. Was listed as the ICP on the paperwork. That said, I know your background PSD, and recognize that you know far more about this than I do. So to the rest of you, use his answer not mine. I just relayed what I was I thought I was told.
