What do you guys think of using this stuff as a primer for repainting my truck? the black POR-15 topcoat looks really nice on my dad's frame, but it says it needs to be topcoated with something else if its going to be exposed to UV light, so thats out of the question for body color.
Its supposed to stop and prevent rust. I'm going to do my frame with it eventually, but my truck right now is white and boring, Just looking for some tips for the future-i won't be doing this anytime soon.
I'm not sure. i'd like a black or a metallic black, or even a dark gray (the one metallic-gray color ford has..), but i want it to be very duarble and resistent to scratches and dings as i offroad my truck frequently and it will probably end up as an offroad project eventually.
The POR-15 is supposed to be very strong-rock hard it claims, but thats kind of useless if i can't have it exposed to sunlight.
You might try Martin-Senour Industrial Paint laid down over a good epoxy primer. Industrial grade single stage paint is very hard and durable, it is the type of paint that is used on equipment (dozers, backhoes, etc.). They have a good selection of colors. Gloss Black seems to be what you are looking for. Also use their harder in the paint, it makes a difference in the toughness. My local NAPA carries the Martin-Senour line here.
also..using the new hard clear-coats- urethane- is a good hard finish over the paint of your choice (for the most part). I'm getting ready to paint my son's '83 bronco and have decided to use a thick poly like for a truck bed for the lowest line on the body to protect from rock chips etc- then metallic blue (acrylic enamel) for the side panel which will graduate to metallic black for the top end of ides, hood and up. Then finish with a bit of candy just to play a bit and top with the urethane clear- should be a tough paint job and is very easy as painting goes. Put a lot of emphases on the clear.
Also look at easton's rust product- I bought a bunch or POR stuff and may not even use it as the easton is proven better and is compatible with other paints.
