Hello, I am new to ford diesels and would appreciate any advice. I would like to put a turbo on my 92 idi. It has about 40k on a new crate motor. I have looked at ATS, Banks, and HYPERMAX, but I cant seem to find any comparisons on the three. Does anyone have some advice or comments.(good or bad) Are there any other turbos? Thanks in advance.
I put a Hypermax Pulse sytem on my '93 this past summer and really like it. I am running with 3.5" Hypermax exhaust. The turbo and exhaust really gave this motor some life; better acceleration, better power, and it is less affected by altitude. The engine had 144,000 miles on it when turboed.
From what I have read, all three systems are great.
I have talked with customer service from Hypermax and Banks on different items and issues, and both have been very nice to deal with.
Any one of the three will make you smile when it is installed and you get on it.
I have the ats, seems fine to me, I do wish the turbo was a bit smaller, boost is a bit slow to come on and with the wastegate wired shut I can't boost past 14 lbs. But I guess that is safer. An inner cooler would be nice too.
Thanks for your time on the replies. What about fuel mileage between the three systems? The best I have gotten in stock form on a pretty flat freeway at 70-75 MPH is about 15 MPG.(no load on truck)
For what its worth, ATS was contracted by Ford to buld the factory Turbo IDI's in 93 & 94'. Of course ford managed to screw it up with their tiny downpipe, but overall, its a pretty safe bet ATS has more R&D $$ and time into their 7.3L IDI turbo kit than anyone else. Also, you would be able to get replacement parts from the ford dealer for the ATS system components (well, except the downpipe). Botom line, if it were my $$ I'd be inclined to go with ATS, but any of the systems will be a huge improvement over NA.
If the price is such that you could afford to re-build the used turbo and you get everything you'd need to mount it I'd say buying a used one is not a bad idea at all. Turbo's do wear out and a used one may very well need to be re-furbished, keep this in mind and you should do well. You can also look at scrapyards for a 93-94' Factory Turbo IDI as well as used aftermarket turbo's.
I have the hypermax kit on my motorhome its a class C ford E350 E4OD trans. I did wrap the pipes from manifolds to the turbo with header wrap and the down pipe till about 3/4 the way past the trans. I had read on the RV web site how the 460 gassers get the dog house very hot and did not want to make a problem with more heat and it's been O.K. so far. Power is good max boost is about 10 sometimes 11psi but by then things are getting kinda hot right at 1000deg on the pyro... fuel consumption has not been to bad if you are on it hard holdin it at 80 or so on the interstate it has set a new record for worst mpg at 9.4 best was from KC to Des Moines up the old 2 lane highway about 50mph (had A knot on the sidewall of the inside dual and did not want to change it on the road so just limped it home) got the best ever at 14.3 mpg this way. but mostly around 12.5 at 65mph no wind in the flatlands 10.5 to 11 at 70 to 75 or hills or wind.....but the best thing is I can still run 75 on the hills or in heavy wind B-4 the turbo I hade to get use to 60-65 or a lot less in the Rocky's it scales right at 12,000 loaded full fuel & water. Went with the hypermax kit because it was the only one with a "kit" for the E series. I do with I had room for an I/C I could really turn up the fuel then but MPG would go to heck
