That is what is done when brakes are replaced, and you do this to get the air out of the lines.

"Bleeding breaks" is when the bone comes through the skin, also known as a compound fracture.

You are "bleeding" the air out of the hydraulic lines. This is crucial anytime the system is opened, because air can be compressed, unlike the brake fluid.
