EGR Valve

Can anyone explain what the EGR valve does, I know it's for Edmissions control. I would like to know what it does while its connected and what it does if I keep it disconnected, will it help anything?

Thanks David

EGR - exhaust gas recirculation

Controls the exhaust gas picked up from the crossover pipe or exhaust manifold to the inlet located in the intake manifold or below the carburator.

There are 2 kinds of EGR valves. Tapered Stem and Exposed stem.

Hope that helps ya out

Like the other poster said, it injects exhaust gas into the intake manifold which gets sucked into the cylinders with the air and fuel. The exhaust gas is considered neutral and does not burn. Somehow they figured out by injecting this neutral gas into the cylinders, it will take up space and helps retard the formation of some sort of gas (NO2?). They say it has a cooling effect on the combustion process. Anyway, the carb is calibrated leaner for this exhaust being injected into the engine. If you disconnect it, or it's not working, it will cause the engine to ping under light throttle. The space in the cylinders that was taken up by the neutral exhaust gas when the egr was hooked up, is now being filled with air when you disconnect it. This makes the engine run lean because of the carb calibration, and this is what makes it ping.

Finally got mine hooked up for an upcoming smog check. What a total loss of power and performance. I'm going to disconnect it as soon as the test is over. (300-6)

Like franklin2 said, it will cause your engine to run a little lean and maybe ping. If you do disconnect it, be sure to re-adjust your fuel/air mixture screws on the carb, and maybe even the floats. This will give a little extra fuel to fill the extra space in the combustion chamber. Running an engine too lean can seriously damage a motor, possibly even burn a hole through the piston. Running to rich isn't exactly healthy either, and may cause excessive carbon build-up. But a good rule of thumb: running a LITTLE rich is better than running lean.
