Hi, I just bought a 1994 Ford Explorer and I was searching ebay for parts and I came across computer chips that plug in and give you up to 25 more hp. Are these for real? Are there any risks involved? Anyone else try these? Thanks for the help!
BS - trust me on this. I'm waiting to calm down a bit yet before I post my reply on SCT in the chip forum. Any bolt in without a dyno will be a complete waste. Mine was programed on a dyno and got a whopping 4 HP over stock. It's a 93 CA Explorer so it has the exact same engine controls as your 94. Don't waste your time. If you PM me your email, I can send you my dyno results so you can see.
I believe you on the results. What is the best way to get more power out of my ride? I am used to having old trucks with easy engines to work on... I am new to fuel injected engines. Any help would be appreciated. What about an aftermarket air intake setup? I saw one of those on ebay as well.
I've got a cold air intake with K/N style conical fliter, larger MAF sensor, Borla headers, flowmaster cat-back and a "high flow" cat.
You can play with the gear ratios if you want but that's a different story.
I'm getting 133 rear wheel horse but I didn't have a stock baseline. Runs pretty good and I'm happy with it as is. Ford had gotten pretty good at dialing in these SFI 4.0's.
Next step would be a bigger cam but then you need a custom tunable chip to make it work, and a good professional tuner and dyno.
