Voltage variations

My 83 has a strobing effect when at idle, can see the dome light and stereo winking at me.
Also, my pyro goes nuts when I have the lights, wipers, and heat blower running. Makes the gauge get all fluttery, stops acting like that when I turn all the other things of. Even flutters when I touch the brake pedal.
What gives, regulator being bad?

Could be brushes in the alt or the regulator pulsing, check the battery volts at idle..if they pulse then I would think regulator.

it could be the belt slipping a bit every time the vaccum pump goes arround or dirty connectons on the alt and regulator, check the batt voltage, connections and if you can take the alt and regulator off and get them tested

And if all of that doesn't do it then you might have a bad diode in the alternator. Then it's either replace or live with it.

How old are the batteries?

When I start to see my lights get brighter when I give it throttle I start checking battery connections and make a stop at the parts store to have the batteries load tested. Usually I leave money at the battery store soon after that if the connections were OK.

I bought it last February and I believe it has batteries from Walmart. The guy I bought them from had just put them in. I'll check the voltage at anyway, and maybe change the alt with a spare that I have. I want to get a higher amperage anyway.
Better to replace all that stuff now and lose the risk of breaking down when I'm depending on the old girl.
Thanks for all the advice!

Wally mart has 1000 CCA batteries pretty cheap, you do need a minimum of 850 CCA on each battery.

I was going to by the Diehard Golds, I'm not real fond of Walmart, haven't been in a store in years, but don;t mind other people shopping there.
