Unhappy Driveline vibration

OK guys, I have a '78 F150 SC 4x4, 351M, C6, NP205, 9" 3.50 gears.
On most cold days, I start driving the truck after letting her warm up, and I start hearing this whining noise somewhere underneath the rear seat in the supercab. This has gone on for a year or so. It doesn't happen on hot days.
Recently, within the past week, I have picked up a serious vibration from somewhere in the rear at certain speeds. I crawled under her and started shaking the drive shaft. U-joints seem to be tight (no clunking) but the drive shaft bearing (carrier bearing?) is down-right sloppy. (visible play) Could this be the problem? Is it time for a new one? Could this be the source of the noise on cold days? How hard are they to swap? Thanks fellas.

I'd imagine that's where your noise is coming from if the u-joints are all tight. Mine makes a little noise too and has some slight vibrations. It hasn't got bad enough to warrant replacement yet but I'll need to do it soon.

I had mytwo piece driveshaft and carrier bearing redone when I did my tranny swap. The work was done at a specialty driveline shop. The tech at the shop has been there forever and told me the Ford carrier bearing is not the best design and he replaced mine with an upgraded type. That's probably the root of your trouble. I dont know if the carrier wears enough to throw the angles out but the angles should be 3 degrees on the front shaft and 6 degrees on the rear with the truck on a level surface.

My 1979 F150 did the same thing, replaced the bearings in the rear and front of rear end of the coupling that the drive line attaches to, they had to use a shim kit when doing so, also had a tube cut for the drive line using the old coupler that attch to transfer case and rear end, balanced all four tires and had the front rotors turned, now she drive great smooth and quite, cost me about $550 but well worth it. Sometime these old truck just need tightened up in several area, but they are fixable, it will last another 20 years.
