Recently I was stuck up in MA for a few hours. So I went to the ford dealership and looked at used trucks. Things were slow a young salesman maybe 25 tops came out and we BS'd for a while and ended up walking over to the used truck section. I was asking the prices on F250/F350 4x4's regular cab 1999-2003 trucks Diesel and the 5.4l's (plain work truck). Asking price started at $20k. The blue book for the 5.4's have the retail prices $8k lower. (99 5.4l F250 regular cab 4x4 ==$12k)
How valid are the blue book retail values?
The salesman said no fair offer would be refused. Having watched our company just trade in a few vehicles and get blue book wholesale (exactly) I was wondering if it worked the same for a potential buyer as well. That is offer blue book retail max.
the dealer can be counted on to be overpriced. The blue book is something like the average that people are getting for that truck or ones like it based on past depreciations of similar trucks, the options etc. If he's 8k over blue book then he's either dreaming or the truck has been modified. those are the two biggest reasons that I've seen for that much price hike.
Wow, I don't know how they justify that kind of pricing- is the market in MA that much higher than the rest of the country? I doubt it- the internet would balance it out in a hurry. I mean, I've got a 2001 F-250 Supercab 2WD w/ 17000 miles, and my price is $15995. And they want $20k for a '99 regular-cab 4x4? Ouch...
Wow, I don't know how they justify that kind of pricing-
I co-worker years ago had a reputation as being quite lucky with the ladies. When asked how he managed to bag so many, his response was "Well, you gotta tell 'em want you want".
Most walked away, but at the end of the night, he rarely went home alone. He was patient that way.
I'm surprised they had some that vintage on the lot. It's pretty hard to find anything past a '02 that has the miles/condition parameters where we would keep it.
That being said- Jeff, we've had a few mint condition '95-'97 F250/350 4X4 PSD's come through (old style), and they'll bring in the high teens all day long. I don't think we've ever sat on one longer than a week. You can literally take the book and throw it when you come across a nice one.
jschira- there's a lot of truth to that, isn't there?
When I was looking at trading my '99 X back in May, I went to the dealer with KBB.com info in hand. They offered me HALF of the TRADE IN value! I was even being "generous" and used book value based on a truck in WORSE condition than mine. Needless to say, I looked at him cross-eyed & walked away.
Book value is only as good as you are at negotiating, combined with how willing the dealer is to deal.
When I was looking for a truck a few months ago, I came across a '99 F250 5.4, regular cab, long bed, 4x4...for only $10.4K from a used car dealer. It was a beautiful dark green with aftermarket wheels, and brand new tires. I was hell-bent on getting it...but it did have 97K miles on it. Seemed a little high to me...but other than that...that was my "dream truck"*
Assuming that's a 4X4 Crew with good miles, West Coast wholesale on a unit like that would be somewhere in the low $30's, retail in the high $30's. Your own results may vary.
I'm in the used car business myself. And $20000 for a '99 reg cab is rediculously high. He should be embarrased to ask that much for that truck. He might get $10000 for it, if the right buyer comes along. But those regular cabs dont sell that well.
ATC, as far as $10000 for that '99 reg cab you saw on that used car lot, the dealer probably bought that for around $5000, so dont give him more than $7K
I hate to say it since im one of them, but most dealers out there are crooks and like ripping people off. Bottom line is do your homework before you buy. Learn how to use a blue book and bring it with you when you go car shopping. THen you can gaurantee yourself you wont get ripped off. Just remember that dealers are in business to make a profit, so dont be too stingy!!
