Im looking to put a new transmission in my truck and Im not sure what to look for. It needs to be standard and from a junkyard cause I'm severely short on cash. What should I be looking for?
well what truck will this be going into 4speed or what if its gonna be a 4speed i would go with a np435 or a borg warner t-18 they are both legendary and pretty much indestructible and they can be found for cheap just my 2 cents
Oh sorry guys. Its going into an 87 bronco with a 302. It doesnt matter if its 4 or 5 speed, I just need it to bolt in. Ive gone through 3 AODs and Im sick of automatic trannys. I dont have the money for a new or rebuilt transmission and cant seem to find any decent used ones. The hassle of hooking up the clutch looks like less then the hassle these stupid autos have been given me. So hopefully this will help you to help me. Just tell which trannys are good, and what they look like. Thanks again guys
B.O.D.88, either the NP435 or BW T-18 would be a good manul 4-sp to swap to. Get the clutch pedal, linkage and the other hardware from the donor truck in the yard to make things easier. Check out Novak Enterprises for info and pics on these and other manual shifters.
Those trannies are bulletproof and cheap. Can't beat em. Make sure to get one with a juice clutch. Look for that was behind a 300, 302 or 351. You'll need the bellhousing, crossmember, and pedal assembly. You also may or may not need to change your driveshaft lengths.
The Borg Warner T-19 is a good choice too. It's pretty much the same as the T-18, but the granny gear is a little higher and I think it's syncronized. I actually have one to get rid of, but I don't think you would want it. I think it needs bearings. It always shifted good and never jumped out of gear, but it was noisy. Also, the bell housing, flywheel, and clutch are from a 460.
Well, I got back from the junkyard today with a five speed overdrive transmission. It came out of a 93 f150 with the inline six. I couldnt find any other trannys so I hope this will do. How do I know whether its the ZF or M5OD? I'm guessing I will need a new flywheel and clutch, is that right? Or would the ones from the junkyard yard work? Other than that I think can handle what work is ahead, unless Ive overlooked somthing you guys can point out. Thanks again...
If it came out of an F-150, its a light duty M-5OD Mazda. F-250's came with a ZF with the 351W. With the M5, change the rubber plugs in the top of the tranny, or you won't have any fluid left in it when running.
