Anybody know if the 95 Ranger 2.3 with the 8 spark plugs has the fail safe cooling system? I bought the truck yesterday from a friend who was told it needed the engine replaced. The truck runs rough, like missing on a cylinder, but the oil dipstick does not have the typical milky looking oil/coolant mix that is consistent with a blown gasket. Plugs and wires are new. I was told that the heater core leaked bad and when I removed the rad. cap there was no coolant in the radiator. I added water and then opened the draincock to see if it would drain out and nothing came out, so that told me that the radiator is clogged bad, number one. The I started thinking if there's no coolant in the system, the coolant sensor can't get a good signal and will enter the computer into failsafe to protect the motor, if this engine is equipped with that. Anybody know if it is? I'm hoping that if I replace the radiator, all hoses, sensor, cap, and thermostat and put fresh coolant in, it will run good again. I really don't think it has a blown head gasket. Any ideas?
The coolant sensor just measures temperature. And has no fail-safe as far as I know. A big problem with 2.3Ls is the heads crack when they are overheated the tiniest bit (make a mental note of that). So obviously the computer isn't runnin' them down if it senses a higher heat than normal, that comp will let it run right into the dangerous levels that eventually crack very expensive parts...
I didn't know the 2.3L had a problem with heads like the 2.9L does.
I've never seen or heard of a plague of problems with heads cracking on the 2.3's, just the 2.9's that are highly vulnerable to head damage and gasket issues from overheating.
I have heard of the 2.3L dual spark plug head having cracking issues, it's just not as common as with the 2.9. Again this is only the dual spark plug, the single plug didn't have these issues.
