automatic transmission question

I have an 05 PSD. Recently when leaving a filling station, I pulled the gear shift lever into 3rd rather than drive. Now on past automobiles, they would still start out in low gear and shift up to 3rd. This truck when in 3rd starts out in 3rd. I asked my salesman about it and he said all gears below drive essentially act like a manual transmission. Is he correct or blowing smoke up my a%#?

yes he is right. it becomes a full manual below D chevy uses up shifts so it will go 1 , 2 then 3 when placed in 3 ford will start in 3 and never leave 3
