I have been using my new to me/old TIG to weld in flooor pieces and patch about 40 extra holes in the firewall on Willard. I have always gas welded sheet metal. The control of the heat is so much better with TIG than with gas. It is an old 70's 300/300 Miller with a water cooled Tig and a foot pedal. I am not good at it but am learning. I went thru 1/2 a tank of Argon just practicing. I want to get to the point that I hammer weld (weld and planish) with the TIG. I really like the machine! I bought it for light money after the plant where I worked was shutdown. They only had two of the single phase machines. Mine was the most complete of the two.
Howdy so far I have welded mild steel, stainless steel(stainless steel almost flows like solder!), and aluminum with my Miller Synchrowave 180. I'll never go back to the "old" way!!
There are some things that REQUIRE gas(welding).....but you can just about weld anything with a Tig (now known as a GTAW...Gas Tungston Arc Welding)
Regards,
Rick

A factory I used to work for purchased a Miller Tig for welding some stainless process piping on some fill lines we were building. It was a great welder we used it to weld everthing after that, sure wish I could afford one now.
I believe that Heliarc is a brand name (old time). My torch head is a Heliarc. I would not have bought it if I had to pay the new prices. I am just over $500 for everything including an assortment of rod, an argon bottle, spare collet and cup and tungstens. The disadvantage is that it is big by todays standards. The trip home in my 90 Ranger probably was the heaviest load the truck had to carry. When they loaded it with a fork lift, I should have had them rotate it 90 degrees. The front of the machine is the heaviest. Twas a slow ride home, no power steering needed!

Yea, all it takes is being at the right place at the right time with the money in hand. I also lucked-out a couple weeks ago I found an 89 S-10 T5 trans in perfect condition for $30.00. It wasen't in the headline it was buried in an S-10 for parts, on Craigs list.
Good score on that welder though, "Someday" I will have one also.(if mama will let me LOL)
I didn't tell mama until after I bought mine.......(and I didn't say how much it was!!)

Thanks for the picture. In a separate post (firewall question) I am looking for info on what are the correct holes. Could you take a look at that post and get back to me.
Thanks
