Hi,
I am looking for suggestions on what carb and possibly intake to replace the stock Motorcraft 4350. The truck is stock. I use it mostly for towing a 23 foot travel trailor and basic truck hauling type duties. I would like to get a little better gas mialage and a little more oomph from my rig. What setups can you guys reccomend that won't cost a 2nd mortgage and that an average hack-backyard mechanic like me can install? What linkage mods, if any, will I have to make? What about my EGR? Any and all advise is appriciated...
My humble two cents would be either the Edelbrock Performer 600cfm carb and the matching intake if your budget allows or the Holley Street Avenger 670 cfm carb and performer intake. Weiand Stealth also makes an excellent dual plain intake. The two carbs mentioned above are pretty much plug and play. I run an Edelbrock and have had no problems. All these setups can be had with EGR if needed. Good Luck.
I put an offenhouser port o sonic on my 460.. I dont recommend it tho.. it was overkill.. make sure you get a dual plane intake.. one from say idle to 5500 or so... and I would go with an edelbrock carb.. I am very pleased with mine.. I run a 750 with electric choke on mine... needless to say when U open the 4 on this truck at a higher rpm it feels like it is goin to suck the hood in... but like I say dont get a single plane intake as it will kill the low end torque...
I went with the Edelbrock Performer RPM as the regular Performer is basically a replacement for a stock intake. I also run a Holley 750 with vacuum secondaries and electric choke. The RPM is a dual plane intake which is what you want.
I'm also running the Performer RPM and 750 carb with a warmed over 460, but with a stock motor and towing I was thinking the basic Performer intake and smaller carb should produce better results(?).
Right on the money. I swear by the Performer RPM but for his engine and desired use a regular Performer and smaller carb would be better. And the Performer is not the same as the stock 4-barrel intake, it is a copy of the "S" code mustang GT intake, which although a factory intake is not entirely common. They can be found though if you want to look a little and save your cash.
Everybody probably won't agree with this but a quadrajet would probably do about the best you can do for economy and performance. It has small primaries which help conserve fuel and provide some low end for cruising around. When you need wide open thats what the big back barrels are for. You would need a spreadbore manifold or is the 4350 a spreadbore anyway?
The quadra would be best for economy, but not performance. Most of the intakes for his application are not spreadbore, which is what he'd need for that carb.
