Question road trip

hey to all ford dudes and dudettes... i got a ?... im driving to nevada from tennessee to pick up a 57 nash metro... ive installed a class 3 hitch on my 94 f-150 4-wheel drive pick up... it has the 302 engine in it with automatic tranny and overdrive... when coming back with the car trailered should i keep the overdrive engaged or push the button to disengage the overdrive... ive heard that one should not use the overdrive hauling big loads due to so much shifting in the tranny... any pointers... ??? thanks.... steve

Yea, its definitley a good idea to turn the od off. Youll kill the tranny.

Hmmm, the bumper on my 95 was already rated for class III, but....

Depends on your final drive ratio, which is negatively influenced by tall tires. IIRC you only have two tall hills to go over (ALB and Flagstaff) and would definately keep OD off in the hills. On the flats listen to your engine and check your fuel mileage. You just might be OK. That Nash is a pretty heavy car, are you sure you won't be over the limit of your truck adding the trailer and all?

Come on up to Ohio I have a 57 Nash in two pieces... including an engine and tranny for it! lol good luck on the trip, and I'd keep it out of overdrive. Dont worry though, I'm sure the ol beast wont let ya down!

Keep it outta OD, suck up the penalty in gas MPG's, keep the motor in its happy torque band and keep the tranny running cool. You do not want to be in OD towing a load 'cause even if your tranny isn't downshifting all the time it will still be running hotter than it sould.

Cheers!

Mike

If you have time, I'd install a trans cooler before taking on that load.

honestly, i'm a stick driver so I've never installed on myself before. it doesn't look very hard. line in, line out - how hard could it be?

you're gonna be crossing some desert in this trip. Although colder weather is upon us, I'd still consider it. I'm in PA and we just had a 60 degree day yesterday. I can only imagine how it is in Nevada.

Most tranny cooler kits arent gonna make u cut and flare tubing. Its usually jus dril and tap the holes for the fittings....... i think.

They sell tranny coolers at autozone. How hard can they be to install?

As to the OD question, it's a widely accepted myth that towing in overdrive will ruin your tranny. It's just not true.

What kills a tranny is gear hunting. If the tranny is going in and out of overdrive, then yes, you will blow it up very quickly. If it's sitting in OD for miles and miles on end, then you will be fine. No damage done, I promise.
