Hi all,
I'm relativly new to all of this but I am learning fast. I'd like to change the gearing in my 75 F-100 4x4 with 33 inch tires to 4.11 to 1 So I've been looking around for a D 60 figuring if I could find one (rear) I could get a heavier axle and better gearing all at once. So I'm also kinda lookin around for front gears. Now I can identify a Ford 9 inch and thats about it. I assumed that I had a D44 in the front, but thought I'd better check to see if it was a high pinion or not as it was converted to 4x4 by a previos owner. So I'm crawlin around underneath my truck and it hit me that this diff was not the same as under the front of my I'm pretty sure stock 66 Bronco. I've been trying to find pics of a D60 on the web and what little I've been able to learn from the not that great pics leads me to believe that I might have a high pinion D60 in the front of my PU! So If any one can point me towards some real clear pics of maybe both sides of a D60 pig on the web or send me some so I can for sure ID this diff. I'd be very grateful and promise to post back with my findings.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Mar-02 AT 09:48 PM (EST)]I printed out these pics and showed them to my neighbor and he said it was a D44, but I still say it's different than the D44 in my Bronco. Any comments
Looks like a 44 to me. Dana 60's are quite a bit larger than a 44 and I believe they have more ribbing on the center section. D60's also don't have the mounts for coil springs unless they are cu$tom made.
Yep. High pinion, like the one in the pics above and low pinion. The low pinion, or standard rotation, are found in the rear of some vehicles (mostly jeeps) and in the front of many older trucks (60's and early 70's Fords). The high pinion, reverse rotation, is found in 73-79 1/2 tons and 78 and newer 3/4 and 1 tons.
take a picture of the axle u-joints and i can tell ya for sure, but that pumpkin looks like a 44 to me, my 60 has alot more meat on it, along with more ribbing
Duh! I knew that! I musta been having a brain cramp. I's still like to know how to identify a 60 for sure because I looked at a 66 Ford parts truck this AM and the rearend was definatly not a 9 inch Ford.
If you look on the housing near the cover there will be a 60
stamped(raised letters) on the housing to identify a dana 60 rear
Also if it has a rear cover its a dana 60 to access the gears
