i have a 97 f250 hd xlt with no hitch on it. i was wondering if there was any other safe places to hook some straps up to if i happen to get stuck or anything with out putting a hitch on or anything. i dont tow anything, so theres really no need for the whole hitch thing, and i dont wanna tear my bumper off or anything.
hehe, and i also wanna hook up to my boss's new titan and see what happens. we always crack jokes on eachothers trucks and i wanted to see who's would outpull. i heard those titans had some torque, but ya never know.
the best place to pull from is your frame rails. bad part is if you dont have a hitch the strap/chain will contact the bumper somewhere and can cause some damage.
i bet you could find a trailer hitch on ebay for somewhat cheap! it'd be worth it to me. not to mention you have an f250, the time will come when you will really need to haul a heavy trailer!
the rear bumper on my 97 250HD is v-5 rated....i've used it to pull many people out. as for the front, i mounted superduty tow hooks thru the front bumper.
I don't like pulling hard directly from a frame rail.. you risk tweeking one frame rail back farther than the other. If you don't want to have a heavy bumper on the back, I'd get a heavy hitch and a receiver shackle.
Or make a bumper similar to fishie's rear pipe bumper. I always like to have something heavy to brace the frame rails (like a hitch or heavy-duty bumper), and pull from the middle of the rear of the truck.. the reason being is that most stock crossmember are pretty flimsy.
A ron1n could you post some pics of the front tow hooks,Did you mount them to the frame?I have a 97 350 W/stock bumper and want tow hooks bad.

thats what i mounted, i'll try to remember to get some pics tomorrow. but yes, they are mounted to the frame. i used a 4" hole saw on my drill to cut holes in the stock front bumper, and mounted the tow hoops vertically.
I'm w/ breman242 on this, you don't want to pull from just one rail.I ended up w/ a truck that went down the road crooked after pulling a fullsize Bronco w/ a Ranger

lol thats a tid bit different! you were pulling a fullsize half ton with a compact ranger. not sure if you know this or not but the frame on the ranger is a fraction of the fullsizes!
i do agree but thats comparing a tractor trailer to an ATV
