95 Explorer dead coolant temp gauge

New to the forum...I did a search and learned a lot about thermostat problems but nothing exactly like I have. The coolant temp gauge was intermittent for a while (normal readings then dropping to below Cold, pegged on the bottom, accompanied by a "Check Gauge" light, then eventually back to normal). About 6 months ago it quit altogether, now it never comes off the bottom peg and the "Check Gauge" light is on pretty much all the time. The thermostat is OK, the dealer said it was the gauge not the sending unit but they wanted $500 for the part and $150 to install it. Needless to say I passed on that. I have just been doing without and keeping my fingers crossed. From my search I see that it could be a bad wire from the sending unit. My question is: where is the sending unit? Is it the threaded stud right by where the upper radiator hose enters the engine? If so, I think I will try rewiring it as far back as I can trace it in case it is a broken wire. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I have a 91 which is similar to the 95's. The temp gauge lead is in a small connector harness near the alternator. There should be 2 connectors, but the temp lead is in the smaller of the 2. The dash gauge unit can easily be replaced. The pods are modular and just snap into the dash panel backplane. Pull the dash trim, remove the plastic see thru cover and pry out the gauge pods. I bough a complete dash unit from bone yard and got it for less than the dealer quoted for just 1 of the pods. Sending unit is indeed near the upper radiator hose water neck and has just a single lead on it. All are relatively easy fixes.
