I need to use the tow hooks in the front of the truck to pull out some stumps. My question is will I do any damage to the transmission by pulling in reverse. I have a 04 f250 4x4.
I've heard some discussions about people trying to back large travel trailers out of holes and causing damage due primarily due to the lack of airflow through the transmission cooler. Stump pulling in reverse might create the same circumstances.
put it in 4L 4x4 lock the hubs and have at it,Depending on how big the stumps are and the root system. you may need to cut some of the roots to the tree stumps.
Have you ever pulled stumps before ?
Take up the slack in your strap or chain slowly then go from there slow steady pull .
No jerking this is what puts the strain on the drive line.
If you can pull from the rear it would be better.
Just my $.02

i have heard some people say they prefer to pull in reverse......for short jobs such as stump pulling, or helping people out of ditches, etc. especially when the ground traction may not be the best.... the weight of the engine helps for that.
Be careful in reverse, cuz what your pulling (stump) could come flying at you if something breaks loose. Put a blanket on the tow strap to hold it down. It may save your grill or winshield. Wouldn't be the first time that I've seen it.
