Migraines!

So i just had my another migraine a few hours ago. Its really annoying when you think your medication is working and then you get another migraine 6months later. I dont mean to whine, i know when you think of migraine you think of some woman on tv complaining and trying to sell advil or something. Well now i know what theyve been complaining about. A lot of people think a migraine is a really bad headache. I guess you could call it that. However not many headaches will make you vomit or even hallucinate. Im sure theres a few of you out there who understands. Still though i keep my head up cause i know its not right for me to complain about this when some people have it much worse. So anyway, just had to get that off my chest.

I know that migraines can be very painful.

Some people can't even tolerate light when they have a migraine.

I don't get them, but I do get headaches.

I probably average 4 headaches per week.

Sometimes they'll last a week.

But they're mild to moderate in intensity.

I'm used ot them.

Sorry to hear about your migranes. Comparing headaches to migranes is like comparing a shot of bud light to a shot of bacardi 151. Have you found anything that helps? I have had 2 friends that have had severe migranes and found the problem. The first was a heavy coffee drinker and eventually gave it up and the migranes subsided. But the other one had old mercury almagamate fillings in her teeth that had mercury leeching out giving her the migranes. She had all her old fillings ground out and replaced with the new polymer stuff and like magic no more migranes. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

My mom has migraines from time to time. She found that medications weren't doing it but she also found a small glass of red wine (understand this woman doesn't drink at all not even on New years eve) and they would subside. I am not talking about a bottle of red wine just maybe a 6oz glass. Don't know if that would help or not but it sure helps her.

Kirby gets migraines. Had them off and on since he hit puberty (he is 65). Gets the "flashes" and "squigglies" across his eyes before the pain hits. So at least he is aware soon enough to be prepared. When he was younger, these made him nauseous alot. There was little medical help back then. Basically take an APC and hope for the best. Someone told him, back then, that Pepto Bismol would help the nausea. Nope. Now he cant stand the stuff.

Since we have been married, he found the best way to help relieve it was meditation and controlled breathing in a quiet darkened room. A form of biofeedback. Until we found that, it was all kinds of medications that just did not work. However, a good strong cup of british tea would help (caffine) sometimes.

His mother suffered from persistant sinus headaches and from what she told us about her mother (Kirby's grandmother) her mother had migraines. So it ran in his mother's family. As we have two children, the chances of one of them having migraines was 50/50 (does not run in mine.)

Our 19 year old daughter gets these too and last for weeks. Hers will pull back for abit and then, wham, hit again during this period. She just lives with it and only triple strength tylenol will help to some degree. She is still able to function well enough, though. She tried a couple of doctor's subscriptions but these made it worse and could not stand the side affects.

Our son takes after me by rarely getting headaches and only occasional stress ones at that.

So, I offer my heartfelt sympathies and do have a good idea what you are going through.

I get the the same kind, I start seeing spots and loosing my vision(very scary when I'm driving) then within 15 minutes my head's hurting so bad I'm sick. I have been getting these for a few years now, maybe about one a month. In the last six months I have only had one, what I did was quit drinking soft drinks. Back when I was getting one or more migrain a month I was drinking about a six-pack of diet Pepsi a day. Now I only drink water, milk, and tea. And I have only had one migrain since I quit, and I feel better all over.

There are things that can trigger a migrain, it there is anything that you do a lot of(like me drinking the Pepsi's) try quiting for a while and see if that helps. You should also try to think about what you did the day before, if you ate or drank or did something that you usually don't do.

Hope this helps

Tim

Yes Imitrex really kicks a$$, my mom takes them on a weekly basis and they help out a lot, for the average person like myself, they will knock you flat on your back ! I've only ever taken one imitrex and I was out for 3 hours like 10 minutes after I took it, it did the trick ! glad they help you too.

I think I've had maybe 2 migraines in my life. Once before I met my wife, and once about 3 years ago. Talk about pain. Brought on by (apparently) nothing. Just sitting there, watching tv, then I started to get tunnel vision. Then it felt as if my head were going to pop like an overfilled water balloon. The pressure got worse with every heartbeat. Now, I'm not the type of person who needs tylenol, advil, aspirin or what have you, but I'm sure none of that would have helped.

I got a "regular" headache just last week. I don't really know how to grade intensity, but those 2 migraines were a 10, this one last week was probably a 4 or 5. Anyway, I'm over at the in-laws, and my mother in law, and wife, are just about forcing me to take an advil. You'd think I know how to take care of myself. Not according to these two.

Yeah. Next time I get a headache or migraine, the best thing anyone can do for me is shut the hell up and leave me the hell alone.

thorshoeing,

I just spoke with Kirby about what he thinks brings his on now.

When he is under alot of stress while working hard for days in the shop, that's when they generally come. His "auras" are geometric, gold sparkly that come from the side or start in the middle from a small dot and widen. From the aura to full headache, will last about an hour or more. But when it leaves, his temples stay achey as if with a bad hangover for longer. He remembers this all started at age 13.

After all these years, and from his own research, he feels what causes them can be from anything. Diet, drink, stress and more. Each person is different.

Yeah, when the aura appears while driving....scarey and he has to pull over until, at least, the aura passes.

I just read the other day that a migraine can be stopped by rubbing ice on the web between the thumb and forefinger.

I've had migraines before, but not with enough regularity to go the medication route. One or two a year is about the norm for me, ever since I was about 14. Most times I can just wait them out (generally they don't last more than about 12 hours, although I've had a few that stuck around for a week or so). I've found alcohol works to take the sharp edge off the pain, and then I just hole up in a dark quiet room and wait it out. I'm told I have a pretty high pain threshold, and I think I do, but when one of those migraines hit me, it will put me on my back in no time at all.
