fuel sending unit

How do I tell if the fuel sending unit is bad? or how do I tell if the gauge is bad?
I have a 64 f100 long bed with 292 the gauges are the round style, right now the fuel gauge moves very little than stops.
Thanks guys.

Disconnect the wire to the center of the sending unit, and ground it out for a moment. Watch the gauge, it should go up all the way. Once it gets to the top, and you have confirmed it works fine, disconnect it. If you leave it grounded too long, you'll burn something up.

If it goes to the top, the gauge is fine and the sending unit is bad.
If it doesn't go all the way to the top, then the gauge is bad for sure.
