Hi Guys! I've got a 2000 Windstar w/ 122k miles. I've not really t-shooted it yet, but am just now gathering input. For a few weeks, it's been inoperable, but the other day I tried it and it came on, allowed me to set the speed, accelerate and coast. Then, after a minute or so, it shutoff, not allowing me to re-set it or anything else. Is there a sensor or something I should check out?
First, make sure all your brake lights work, if a bulb is iffy, that will cancel your CC.
Next would be to check the brake sensor right under the pedal. Those don't usually go, but if it got soaked several times with water or snow, that would shorten its life.
Finnally, I am thinking that it might be the switchs on the steering wheel. Either them or the clockspring is worn. But usually your SRS light pops on first. But also your horn would not work.
I have a 96 that had the same type of problem, the CC stopped working for awhile, then worked for awhile, then stopped again. I found the problem to be a faulty brake disconnect switch. It's a pressure switch mounted on the master cylinder, it's what disconnects the CC when you step on the brake pedal. (You may have heard of these causing fires in Ford cars lately) There is a recall out on some models of Windstars for this very thing, but I'm not sure of the years involved, only that my 96 wasn't one of them. Turns out that some of these switches are wired hot even with the key out, and they leak after awile, so on some cars the brake fluid can catch fire even when the car is off. Mine had obvious signs of fluid leakage, with brake fluid running down the wires. It was only a $20.00 part at the dealer, and was also easy to replace. I would check with the local dealer to see if your involved in the recal, and then take a look at the switch, it's just a small round switch on the end of the master cylinder. If theres fluid around it, you probably have a problem there. I believe there is also a list of affected cars on the NTSB web site. Good luck.
