I have a '79 F-100 Custom with 180K miles on the frame. Recently the speedometer went wild and has begun to go erratic, squeaking, etc. I took the instrument cluster out to see if I could see any obvious problems, but didn't find anything broken. I have been told that the inserts for the speedometer are plastic and will wear out.
Has anyone had any experience with this? Where can I find an exploded view or a description of how to work on it?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Mine stopped working like that. All looked good on the dash end, and when I unhooked the cable from the transfer case, gave the cable a spin, and the needle worked fine. But in the tran case, the plastic gear threads were etched away. Unhooked the U-joint of the drive shaft, removed the bolts and bearing and the plastic gear slid right out. The new part cost me $40. Quite a bit for a plastic gear. But thats what it was.
Im trying to find the right plastic speedometer gear for my 79 ford f-150. Had like a 273 rear in it with the right gear, know has like a 350 rear, whick is the stock rear, but no pastic gear, at 70mph my speedometer is pointing straight down, whats the deal???
