adding remote locks etc

hi folks, I have been browsing this site for awhile now and really have not had anything to add need etc any my rig as been running great. its and 89 F150 SC with 4.6 anyway as i said the rig runs great but recently I drove and expedition whith had all the bells and wistles. anyway. I have now been thinken that remote door locks would be nice as step one then maybe an alarm step 2 and then remote start as step 3 although this really isnt needed.

so done anyone have info on how ishould go about or what i need to look at in order to get remote door locks on my rig since it didnt come with it? should i try and get one system that does all of these?

Thanks...

There are quite a few systems out there that will do all three items. There are also quite a few opinions about which ones to get. I am sure others will chime in with their preferences.

The remote door locks are not as bad as some would lead you to believe. You will need an additional 2 relays that you can pick up at any stereo shop for about $7 each. These have to be wired into the system for the locks to work properly. You will see what I mean when you go through the instructions for the installation.

The alarm, well that is all self explanitory. Not tough.

The remote start. The only "wierd" thing is that if you have the electronic chip in your key, then you will need to install a "Key reader" box. This will send a signal from a key inside of it to your ignition allowing it to start without the actual key being in the switch. If you have both keys, you can buy a new one and program it yourself. If you have only 1, then you will need to get another from a dealer. Not real bad but a little pricey at about $100.
If you don't have the coded keys, then you are set.

I used a remote starter for my truck and it was great to have it already warmed up when I got to it. Especially in some of the winters we get here in the Colorado foothills.

For the remote locks, if yours are already power locks, than all that is needed is to wire in the system. Otherwise, you are looking at installing the actuators as well.

Check the net for Remote starters and you will find more than enough info and products to choke an horse.

Yea I would be interested in everyones opinion a little more about my rig. it has power doors now. and does not have the digital keys so i think i am covered there... the one drawback I am seeing here is that I may end up with 3 different remotes which would suck... so if anyone knows of good kits that are modular allowing a single remote and addonn as needed let me know... otherwise i may just have to add the remote locks and call it a day

The kits I spoke of operate with one remote. It has the buttons for each feature, and usually add an extra for trunk release which if your tailgate has a lock, can be rigged to lock or unlock that.

Here is a link to just one product
