For the last couple of weeks I've been hearing a screeching noice from the clutch as I'm starting out in first gear and sometimes going into second. After a couple of minutes of driving it's seems to stop.
This is on a 99 Ranger 3.0L.
Is it going bad or does it just some kind of adjustment? Or should I just keep the wife from driving it?
Lol dont let your wife see that comment or the couch will be your best friend.
My truck makes a whining noise when in 1st in 2nd, but not a screech like you're talking about.
If I remember right, I had the same noise though before my clutch decided to take a crap on me. If this is the same tranny thats behind my 91 with a 2.3, its fairly easy to change the clutch
It is the same tranny. M5OD. (Mazda 5 speed Over Drive). And yes, it sounds like your clutch may be going. Do you ever do second gear starts? They tear that clutch up.

Well occasionally won't kill it. Depending on the mileage, you may just be in the market for a new clutch. Start lookin' around and keep on this one, take your time, shop for the best price, and pick a new one up. While you're in there you can do some other stuff if you want.
Mine has done that eeking sound for thousands of miles now. I think i first noticed it around 30k and i have 57k now and it's not worn out. Theres a service bullentin listed for the problem on all data but i'm too cheap to look up a noise. My truck does the noise when i bone out real quick. Lots of gas and dumping the clutch kinda quick.
Thanks Jim. That's exactly what I'm getting and I'm at 99k/km or 62k/m. If I let the clutch out slowly then I don't get the noise. After it warms up then its fine. Where would I be able to find the service bulletin?
alldata.com It lists all the service bulletin's. It's like $25. I'm too cheap to pay for it since it doesn't pose a problem. If you decide to pay it and check it out, cut and paste it on here so we call all see what it says. I'm just going to ignore the noise and drive the truck till the clutch starts crapping out and then replace it. The clutch will start to slip when it's worn out. Like going down the highway and giving it some gas and having the clutch break loose without touching the pedal.
just in case you dont know how a clutch is made. (generic not technical) its basically a metal plate with friction pads on each side. it sits between your fly wheel and pressure plate, as these friction pads wear down the riviets that holds them in are in contact with the fly wheel and or pressure plate, these rivets and really tear up the fly wheel if left un changed, normally when you change the clutch its a good idea to buy a "clutch pak" that contains the clutch, new pressure plate and release bearing (throw out bearing) you can if you choose pending on inspection of resurface the flywheel or replace the flywheel.
My 98 has been doing this since day 1. I was told by the dealer that it is normal operation. They tightened things up for me at one point after complaining baout it 4 or 5 times, but after a couple months it was back. I now have 124K on that same clutch and it is fine, just anoying sometimes.
Has anyone ever been told it's a problem with the pilot bearings?? I had another make vehicle with pilot BUSHINGS, as opposed to ball or roller bearings. When they go out, or lose their lubrication, they squeal.

I have the same problem on my '99 Explorer. The dealer told me it's the pilot bearing. 30K miles later, still makes noise, but no clutch issues.
