I have a 96 F-250 powerstroke and would like to convert the existing leaf springs to coil springs. Any idea if this is possible thru a conversion kit or replacing the axles with newer axles. My old springs are worn out and I would like to get a smoother ride. I live on a large rocky ranch and the truck can be brutal driving around the ranch. Help will be appreciated.
yes it can be done. you would have to swap in something like a 4-link suspension. do a search for it. probably in an offroad forum or offroad 4x4 like petersons four wheel & off road. or somethin like it . its not all that bad of a swap if you know how to weld and do a little math and fabrication work.
You can swap in a lot of components from an F150 to make it happen, such as radius arms, springs, spring towers, etc. but it will still require a fair amount of fabrication. You'll need to get the radius arm mounts on that axle or perhaps you could use a front axle out of an F150. I'm not sure though, on that year if there's a strength difference between the axles for 1/2 and 3/4 ton so you could be weakening your front end by making such a swap.
I think that year had a dana 50 ttb. It sounds to me like you aren't beating the thing, so I would think a 70s dana 44 with 8 lug outers would be the easiest way. Then you could use 70s radius arms, coil buckets, and would just have to fab the track bar and drag link stuff.
