It depends on if it's a 2wd or a 4x4. The 3 4x4 9 inch rears I've pulled apart have had 31 splines. The only way to know for sure is to pull the axles and count the splines.

The lighter weight had the 28 spline axles and the 31 spline were found in the heavier rated trucks. Most F100's had the 28 spline while the F150's could have either. You don't need to pull the axle and count the splines to determine which you have, just unbolt the retainer and pull the axle far enough to see the bearing. The 28 spline will have a ball bearing assembly and the 31 spline will have a roller bearing assembly.
