I have a 78 F250 4x4 with NP 4speed and 4:11 rear gears. I want to be able to travel with this truck, I haul a 5th wheel with it and 4:11's are just too low. I have a set of 3:54 gears but I was wondering if any of you think I should change the tranny to one with overdrive and if so will the new trannys allow me to use my existing transfer case? I'm trying to get the best of both worlds because I also take it in the woods.

I have same situation w/79 F350.After not driving it for 1 1/2 year the gas mileage seems really horrible.I get 8-9 MPG at best w/stock rebuilt 400 C6.I can literally watch the gauge fall when using rear tank.

I just did this change. I have a low compression 390 with about 180 hp and C6. Because I have such low HP it didn't help my gas milage at all. I now use 2nd gear a lot more getting up the hills and am into the secondaries a lot more. I plan on getting higher compression pistons in it this summer and hopefully help the problem. So if you have good HP you may get a little better milage. Pulling a 5th wheel it may not be a good idea to change gears.
