2001 XLT 4x4, 73k miles... The truck starts up fine, I have a remote Viper starter that I start it with about 90% of the time. Within the past 2 weeks ive noticed a noise that seems like its coming from somewhere in the area of where the starter relay is. It does not do it when its warm, only on cold start. Its not a crunch or thud as Ive seen reported in other posts. Its like a flickering, almost like it sounds when you stick a card in the spokes of a bicycle. It happens for about 3 seconds upon cold start and then its gone, then the truck sounds and runs totally perfect. The only reason i say starter is becasue the noise seems to be coming from the area of where the starter relay is(to the right of the battery), or right behind that area. Anyone ever have this?
thanks!
brand new battery. a clicking or clatter type of noise does exist at startup, only after sitting all night. i generally don't hear it upon startup during the rest of the day.
really... how much did that run you? and how long did it take you? I have a new optima battery 800 CCA, so its not the battery... Im still getting the noise, and its about 15 degrees out, so i gotta deal with it til spring... Is swapping out the starter tough?
I didn't do it myself. I'm sure it's not too hard, but the part was going to cost me $180 at advanced, for a good quality one and my mech was willing to use the same starter and charge me an installed price of $210, so it really only cost me $30 to have him do it. I'm sure there are less expensive starters, though pep boys was $180 for bosch new and $170 rebuilt. They're all expenseive
