The shifting on mine improved dramatically when I installed a Factory Tech accumulator valve body. It's pretty much the same as replacing the Sonnax valve and springs, but the sonnax and springs are MUCH cheaper.
Of course, everyone's definition of "light throttle" is different, but these are Ford's specifications for 1.25 volt throttle position voltage. Also tire size will play a part as you mentioned....but it will be ACTUAL speed as the computer still thinks it's running at INDICATED speed.
So really i'd be ok to turn OD off in town (ie less than 55 actual speed) to keep it from jumping into and out of OD?
or would is it better to let it go to OD and run 13-1400 rpms? which is better on my tranny and good for my pocket book with fuel prices the way they are? as long as i don't let it rev above 2000 rpms
I run mine around town without OD; no more than 50mph. If I get into the 55mph range, I will turn the OD on. My egts stay lower if I run without OD around town, and doesn't hurt my fuel economy running around 17-1800 rpms. Plus it is nice not switching back and forth into OD with the speed of traffic varying so much. Also, it hasn't affected my tranny's performance.
yep, my tranny shifts into OD as soon as it can, and thats right around 43mph. even under moderate to heavy throttle, the tranny will start out in 1st, rev to about 2600, shift to 2200 or so and rev back up to 2500. then when shifting into 3rd, it seems to skip that gear and go straight to OD if i am over 50mph by that time. it is so stupid, going from 2600 rpm to 1500 and then trying to rev back up when youre on the throttle.
You can list my vote under the "I hate the 3-4 shift under 40MPH club". When cold or under heavy acceleration there is a 4th unlocked mode, but not for very long. Also under these conditions, the PCM may see fit to skip locking the TC in 2nd.
Typically if I'm running less than 55 MPH, I will leave the OD off and run in 3rd locked. There is less load on the engine, lower EGT's, and since the TC is locked, virtually no heat is produced in the transmission.
