I had an 87 firebird that had lots of trouble passing California emissions because I drove it so little. Spent lots of $$ on that. Next time, same thing. I solved this issue by going to Pep Boys, bought a product called "Guaranted to Pass Emissions Test Formula Advanced Fuel Treatment". Ran half a tank out and all kinds of soot came out the pipes. Took it up for a pretest with it still in the tank and it passed like it was a new car. Last year I used it on a 1 ton truck I inherited that'd sat 3 years, it passed 1st try. This stuff sells for $6-$8 and I'm a believer.

As soon as I read that I realized what was missing from my thought process of how it worked. My MX-6 for instance would change the timing as you watched but it did have a knock sensor and that makes perfect sense once you explained it.

Good post, very imformative, thanks

Wish me luck guys, I'm about to take my Ranger to get tested right now!!
good luck

Steve
