On long highway trips I sometimes run w/ my 'gate down, never noticed this before but today I was at the rear of the truck, 'gate was up, and I noticed a 'rubbed through' place at the edge of the pass. side taillight. Further inspection found that there was/is an identicle place on the edge of 'gate. Laying 'gate down, I found the same scenario on the driver's side! The 'gate apparently likes to slide left to right about 1/2 an inch or so... not enough to fall of its' posts, but enough to rub the paint on BOTH sides!
I'm sure I'll get a 'just take the gate off, or leave it up while driving" in future replies (if any at all), but I like the gate being readily available if need be. Anyone else noticed this, is there a fix? Maybe shimming the post pivot points w/ some spacers, i.e. fender washers? Factory fixable..... any clues? tyvm for any help. 'BR'
I have an 05' f-350 the tailgate falls off the hinges when I put my 12' Port a boat in the bed and drive down wash boared dirt roads. It has been to the dealership twice to get fixed. The first time they put new bushings and repainted it, the second time they said some one from FMC will have to look at it. Well I can't put any thing in there and drive with the gate down.

Why not try putting on those black rubber molding strips they use on the door edges.. They should be thin enough to not interfere with the normal operation and you wont have paint wear..

I have heard of people installing a common hose clamp on the open (passenger) side pivot of the tailgate to keep thieves from easily taking the tailgate off. I think this may resolve your issue. With the hose clamp on, the tailgate won't jump off the pivot.
It's not foolproof, but it will slow someone down if they someone wants to take the gate as well.
