Performance with 33's

I have a 2005 Ranger FX4 that has the 4.0L V6 and 4.10 gears. I'm looking at putting on a 4 inch suspension lift and 33X12.50-16 BFG A/Ts. I was wondering if my 4.10 gears would be enough with the larger tires. I think it will be. I'm also going to put on a cat-back exhaust system and a K&N air intake kit. I just want to know what my performance will be like? Also, will my MPG suffer greatly? Thanks.....

Well, bigger tires do cut gas mileage. Then again, this 4.0 is no fuel sipper, either.

As for now much oomph gets lost, that depends how much bigger your factory/current tires are in realtion to what you are getting.

The catback and filter will do unnoticeable good for performance compared to gears if your desired tire size is well above what you have now.

10% difference over stock, eh?

4.30s might be acceptable, 4.55s would be almost dead on and you wouldn't have to tweak the speedometer.

But, 4.30s and you can get your speedo tweaked to make up for the minor discrepancy.

Actually, 4.10s with 33s is like what you have now with 3.73s, but that could be a dog off the line. It would be okay, but still.....change if you can.

Good luck.

YOU WILL NEED 4:30's or 4:55"s...I have 4:10's with 33's and DO need to change now.It is OK for street - freeway driving but does need a change for anything else...towing...off-road... This is on my 2006 Ranger.

Hey I have gone through this a couple of times now (re-gearing) and there is one thing to consider hear. When I have re-geared and had my new gears bring me back to stock gear ratio it was still not quite the same, not quite enough, seems like the weight of the tires also might be a factor. I would consider going to 4.88's (I think thats the next step from 4.56's. In other words go a step beyond back to stock gear ratio. Anyway just my 2 cents worth -

Yea I'm sure the extra weight of the tires will effect power along with the added height of the truck and the width of the tires is also that more air you have to "push" out of your way at speed

Yeah thanks guys. I thought that the 4.10s would be OK but they will be just OK. Plus i might just wait on the lift and do all of the other stuff first.

You're going to have to spend a lot of money to lift a late model 4x4 Ranger.... upwards of $2300+, plus a lengthened driveshaft. I wanted to lift my '04 FX4 until I found out the cost. And I only found one company that made a 4x4 lift, too.

Hey I have heard something intresting about one part of the Fab-Tech lift for Rangers. I heard that with the difrent a-arms I think in one part of the 5 1/2" kit you had to run the specific rim width it sugests (8") or it tends to spit ball joints out. Anybody else ever here that? In any case it might be something to look into before you buy your lift, do some research and ask lots of questions. By the way as far as 4.10 gears and 33's - while it might be ok...you need to go lower, now I am running a 3.0 so there might be the bigger difrence fron my truk and yours, but I re-geared my last 2 rangers to 4.10's (both had 3.0's) and ran 8" wheels and 31's.....my present ranger came with 4.10's from the factory and I am running 31's on it..and it's almost right so to speak, I am trying to squeek a little more power out of it - my point, go to at least 4.56's to run your 33's....while 4.10's will work, if your going to re-gear - go lower...trust me on this. Gas milage be damned, you want to be able to turn 33's on a 10" wheel and not be all bogged down lower gears is the ticket - but hey what the heck do I know....

body-lifts are a good choice for the time being. i have 33's with a 3" body-lift and the 3.slow. it pulls the tires mediocre at best. i'm not sure what gears i've got but would like to change them. i haven't looked into it much, just dealt with the loss of mpg and hp, cause it looks so cool.

I finally took the time to look at these suspension lift kits mentioned above (Fab Tech, Camden, & Pro Comp). Unfortunately, they're all for 2WD Ragers, not 4WD...
Anyone know of real suspension lift kits for late model 4x4 Rangers?
