Reason: NEED ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
With the temperatures in So. Cal. i would reduce the count to 6.
Yes they can easily be overheated with the manual switch.
That is the only downside to the manual system, more so if someone else ever drives the truck.
I did 300,000 miles on my original head bolts in my 6.9.
The rear of the headgaskets were seeping when I pulled the engine, but it still ran fine.
With a NA engine the head studs are just a little more insurance.
Clevite has good products also.
The choice will have to be yours.
I am gettting ready to install a turbo 6.9 in my truck right now.
I am going with the head studs before it goes in.
The head studs I will install are from DPS-Performance.com and are a little more expensive. They are made from tool steel and since I will be running a turbo with the boost turned to it. I want the best I can get. Head gakets will be copper instead of stock as well.
I am also planning to use souped up injectors and IP as well.
If the dollars permit I am also installing a heavy duty valve spring and rocker package.
I now wish I had gone this route instead of the reman route back in 2003. If I had all the wasted dollars back from that mistake I could also add milled ceramic coated pistons to the mix with water injection.
Sounds Like Your Going To Have One Mean 6.9.i'll Probably Go With The Clevite Bolts And Felpro Gaskets.i'm Just Tryin To Get Everything Mechanically Sound.i'll Stash Some Coin Away For The Day She Blows, then Go The Route Your Going.
I could have bought a real mean 6.9 rebuild for what I paid for the reman 7.3 turbo motor.
The reman had a warranty, the hot rod motor did not.
I went with the warranty reman motor.
Three drop in complete motors and several thousand dollars worth of other parts not covered by the warranty replaced I think I made the wrong choice.
