Maybe someone out there can help me.I have a 1995 F-150 with a short box on it.I would like to know if anyone can tell me what size and weight camper I can fit in the smaller bed. The truck has hijacker air shocks on the back,it also has a 3:73 gear,a large trans cooler and a heavy duty radiator. I am new to the camping seen and really have no idea what will fit the bed. Please help!
Now I dont know for sure, but this one older fella told me that a regular 8 foot camper would fit in the back of a shortbox. He was trying to sell me his camper so it might be BS though!
The weight should be listed on the body tag as GVWR this is the max weight of everything your vehicle is designed to carry. (people, stuff, camper, etc.) anything which adds weight. You first will need to take the truck to a scales and get it weighed. This will be your start point. then guess the weight of passengers (don't lie) the guess weight of stuff you might take on trip. This will give you an idea how much the max weight of camper you can haul.
The problem isn't physical size of the camper as much as carrying capacity of the truck. Those campers can be heavy! I have an 11-footer on the back of my '72 F250 Camper Special, which is built with a little extra load-carrying capacity for that reason. I would hate to try to put that thing on an F150, or even a standard 8-foot camper. I can just see it spitting out axles and bearings!
For a short-bed F150 I would look at the newer light(er) weight campers, some with pop-tops. Be prepared to spend a few bucks though.
air shocks ??? bad idea i can see where this is going lol .. but mr inspector person im an 1 and a 1/2 off the stops ..lol only kiding but dont rely on the air shocks to take up the extra weight ... the mounting studs were never intended to carry that kind of weight .. nor were the brakes or axels ... you dont put a breaker bar on a 1/4 drive to brake lug nuts loose right ?? use the right tools for the right job .. when the camper shows or the out door shows come around this winter take a look at them but i do belive you might be limted to a tow behind ... good luck to ya
