I have a 6x12 race trailer that I would like to add brakes to. Has anybody attempted this project with any success? Any recommendations for trailer shops in the Los Angeles area that could do this for me?
I added 4 wheel disc brakes to my boat trailer with parts from Champion Trailer; it's an all hydraulic surge activated system, but you can go electric, disc or drum. I got two new axles, 4 hub/discs and calipers, lines, and surge controller for about $1K. They work great and were not difficult to install.
If that trailer's axle(s) has brake mounting plates, you're in luck; adding brakes will be easy. If not, you'll have to swap out the axle(s). Like Ugly said, Champion should carry everything you need; I put electric brakes on my boat trailer with parts from them (including the axle) and they work great.
