I had the dealer put the mercon (now called mercon 3) back into my transmission today. The part number on the mecon 3 quart was the same one listed on the PDF for regular mercon. It might be my imagination, but the shifts feel a little better (firmer) now than when I was running on mercon 5.
Is the MERCON III bottle you have a Ford labeled bottle with the part # XT-2-QDX or an over-the-counter product like Pennzoil?
Also is it MERCON III or DEXRON III? Someone earlier said there was no product 'MERCON III' but a few people have told me MERCON and MERCON III is the same.

there is no mercon III. mercon and dextron III are the same thing, ie. mercon/dextron III
I had the ford dealership flush out the mercon v and replace it with the correct fluid. They told me that they don't drop the pan when doing the flush, so I'm concerned that they also didn't change the filter. Is this necessary, especially when the wrong fluid was put in. I want to make sure they got all of it out.

I just got a quick look at the front of the quart, but I believe it said mercon/dextron III. It was a motorcraft product and it had part #XT-2-QDX on the back, which is what the chart on the PDF file says is the correct fluid.

With a complete flush, they shouldn't have to change the filter/strainer.
I'm glad you had the extra work done...
Historically speaking, Mercon V came out with a bit of limited-slip additive in it to stop the "chatter" of the clutches in the 4R70W trannies and other car-oriented trannies.
The E40D/4R100 is a completely different animal that never showed the TC lockup shudder or other shifting concerns that the passenger-car trannies did.
So, no reason to use Mercon V in it, and even more-so, no reason for the anti-chatter additive. Even if it didn't destroy the tranny, it's still not required WHATSOEVER. Better safe than sorry.
What did they do for you as far as in writing situation ????
Rich
All they wrote was Flush trans completely and install mercon 3 fluid. Bill parts and labor internal to the shop. This was done one day after they put in the mercon 5. At this point, the service manager still doesn't believe he did anything wrong, but after giving he all the documentation I found here, I think he's starting to questioning it. He's supposed to call Ford engineering on Monday. I'm going to call Ford customer affairs and try to get them to extend the transmission warranty. I'll let you know what happens. Ken
There is no such thing as MERCON 3 or MERCON III. It's just MERCON.
DEXRON III/MERCON is fine. That's what the Ford info says. You don't want to use a fluid that has MERCON V or MERCON SP listed. Those are dual usage, not the DEXRON III/MERCON.

Thanks. After reading the page listed below, I did not want to use a dual usage fluid and thought that MERCON/DEXRON III was a dual usage. I guess the two names threw me since it was very clear in the article to NOT use the dual usage fluids which are (MERCON/MERCON V), (MERCON, MERCON SP) etc... The DEXRON is the GM specification.
The Ford service manager called me today and finally admitted that mercon v should not be used in the 4R100 transmission.
Even though they reflushed the transmission and put the mercon back in, they agreed to extend the powertrain warranty from 3yr/36,000mi to 5yr/75,000 mi to cover any possible damage that could occur.
to me this is something i would not "experiment" with. if they wanted the trans to use V then they would have specified V, the dealership that i work at happens to be a redline oil distributor, and they do offer a mercon synthetic but i did not use this in my trans because i do not feel it is worth risking damage.

Thank you everyone for you help on this.

...I wonder if he is going to contact everyone else that his dealership hosed by putting MERCRON V in. I'd find a new dealer regardless. They have already proven that their attention to detail is lacking severely...makes you question what else? Right now there are several people who paid for a tranny flush driving around without a care in the world...not knowing the consequences of this dealerships actions.
