Where is the speed sensor located on a 2000 Ranger and what does it do? Can it cause erractic shifts in the transmission if it gets dirty?
It is probably not caused by dirt, just a faulty VSS. They are not a reliable part, but are fairly cheap and easy to replace. It is located on the rear end pumpkin. Good luck.

"Can it cause erractic shifts in the transmission if it gets dirty?"
Yes, it did on mine, also a 2000 (Mazda B3000 automatic). The speedo needle just lay at zero part of the time and jumped erratically the rest. The transmission shifted erratically.
The part cost under $25 @ Ford dealer and took 10 minutes to replace. As mentioned above, it's attached to the "banjo" or "pumpkin" -- the case surrounding the differential gears -- on the front -- e.g. facing toward the engine.
