Question Smoking at Idle ???

What would cause grey/black smoking at idle that "sometimes" clears up after the vehicle has been driven ??

Without knowing much about these engines it sounds like injector pump timing is off.

The best way is to go to a diesel injection service that has the proper (expensive) tools.
To retarded and it will run like crap.
To advanced and you risk damage to the engine.

Without the proper tools the only other option is to advance the timing till it sounds like a Power Stroke rattle, then retard it till it quits rattling.

Not a real precise proceedure for setting the timing, I think you will agree.

Roger that.

I used to own a VW Rabbit Diesel years ago. I would advance the IP until it started to smoke and then back it down just a tad.

Ran GREAT and got good MPG as well.

you could set the timing at the timing makrs and try that, i would scratch a line where it was, then turn the pump until the stamped line in the pump lines up with the line in the case that holds the gear, this is one of two ways to time the motor, the otherway being the expensive way, the lines im speaking of are right on top of the castings of the pump and housing, on top of the top bolt, you may have to modify a wrench to get to the nuts, ford/international have a special set of tools for timing adjustments, one to turn the pump, and a special wrench to get the nuts, the wrench is just a half moon style, the thing to turn the pump is useless, just to it with your hand its easy, and if that dosent fix it, you can move it back to where it was originaly, thats the reason for scratching the original position in.
