Are you refering to the Distributator and the eight pointed thing in the middle? If you are just take two hooked tools on each side on the bottom of it and carefully pry it up and off just watch fo the little roll pin that holds it from turnig on the shaft so you don't loose it. Good luck Greg NE
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Mar-02 AT 05:56 PM (EST)]Is the stator bad? Usually the epoxy can break down and cause shorting. Might be best to get a good rebuild unit or have yours rebuilt all the way through. But to get it out, take out the screws that hold the case together. Carefully pry the halves of the housing apart. The stator always stays with the back part of the alternator housing. Once you get the halves apart, take off the nuts in back that hold on your wire terminals. The stator sometimes sticks to the housing, but tap with a rubber or plastic hammer, and the stator along with the diode assembly will come out as one piece.
ooops sorry, i thought you were talking about the stator windings in an alternator...
I would price a new distributer, they are normally about twice as high as a stator(ignition pickup), but the time and trouble saved replacing it is worth that, and you know that all else is good there. How do you know the stator is bad, just curious. Most people replace the ignition pickup, and it is the module or coil:-X23 . Hope this helps, Mason

The stator is part of the pick-up

Thanks for the replys. Been out of town on business. I would like to replace the stator as the truck dies 10 to 15 minutes ino my driving it. In a message listed a few weeks ago, it was recommended that the stator be replaced for this problem. Ignition module has been replaced on firewall. As you guys all know, that goes bad all the time. When I took off the distributor cap, I saw tht the armature is in the way. So I posted my question as to the procedure to replace.
Thanks
