I know I'm going to get blasted for not using the FAQ's , but I did and received no results on fuel gauge.
I just replaced the fuel tank and the sending unit, on a 88 in the rust belt, you do one you do both. Anyways, now that I have these in, my fuel gauge is not responding, even tho I stopped and put 27 gallons of fuel in it on my way home fromt he shop. Any helpful hints as to why the gauge would stop working?
well i would crawl under there and make sure. maybe even add some dielectric grease to make sure there is good contact. asumptions are the mother of all F ups
I was going to do taht tomorrow night after work. They're real good about double checking each other and they always add dieletric to all of thier electrical connections. They're the ones who made that impression upon me to use such a "inexpensive" item liek that.
Well it turns out that the sending unit in the new assembly is bad. After I pull the plug from the tank, the fuel gauge goes to Full, but as soon as I put it back on, it pegs to below Empty. Looks lIke I have to drive it to empty the tank so i can put another new fuel sending unit in. Thanks for everything.
buy the part from ford. that way you dont have this issue again. But you know it could also be your float that is bad. when i did my replacment the float was cracked and had fuel in it as well. the whole unit had 180k miles on it so i replace the whole thing from ford $162 complete with pump, sender, float. was the only way to go
I paid $100 for a new unit from the auto parts store. When I called the local dealer, he quoated me $162, then when I called the other dealer close to here, he said, "That is a dis-continued item". But my new sending unit came complete also.
Unfortunately, every placed that I talked to (about 8) said it was a complete assy. I had to replced my assy because of being north of the rust belt, when I replaced the tank, we inspected the tubes and they were rust through also.
Cheap???? There is no such thing for a sending unit, but I thought $100 was very inexpensive. I had to replace one in anther van and it cost me almost $200. Only thing I can say is check your local auto parts stores. I wouldn't go through a junkyard up here because they would all be in the same shape as what I had.
