We agree it's ground. My Haynes probably has a misprint. Tie it to ground and enjoy your free sensor.

So just plugging it in won't work, I need to make one of the wires a ground?

That's what I thought, just making sure. Could I ground it to the metal part of the sensor, between the washer and 'nut' on top maybe, wrapping the wire between the two and then installing it? Or do I need to try and find a place somewhere else on the engine or frame?

No ground it to the frame, or some metallic object that eventually touches the frame.
