Dual tank problem

I have a 1989 Ford F150 with dual tanks. The problem I'm having is that when I switch to the rear tank it stays full & emptys the front tank. When the front tank is empty the truck won't run. Visually the fuel gauge changes so the switch seems to work. I replaced the rear tank fuel pump with no change. Any suggestions.

the switch that selects between the fuel level senders is working, but the solenoid mechanism between the tanks is not.

It's located on the fuel rail, and it needs to be replaced.

the solenoid is on the driverside framerail. it's a 6 port solenoid/valve assy on my 89 f150 efi.the haynes manual covers it in chapter 4 page 11. no pics of it though. Mine's also a pressure activated solenoid/valve, so I'm pretty much going to have to go to ford for the part when it gives up.
hope this helps

Question

My truck has a 6 port fuel supply reservoir that is not activated by a solenoid, its some type of presure operated device. Federic said a solenoid on the fuel rail which would be an electrical operated device up close to the injectors or presure regulator.

There is no solenoid. Only the 6 port fuel supply reservoir like tuntloan said.
Here is a drawing of it.

I had to buy mine at Ford and it cost about $80. Fixed the same problem, though.

I have an 89 f150 4.9 that has the same problem thanks for the help, I was wondering if this canister could also cause problems when running after my truck hits running temp it starts acting like it is starving for gas. Any thoughts Thanks Boatbum

Just replace the fuel tank selector valve as pictured above. Your problem is that it has failed and is allowing crossfeed. The valve is NOT electro-mechanical, but rather pressure ONLY activated. I just had the EXACT same problem on my 89 f150 w/dual tanks. Hope this helps

I would think that if the selector valve would show problems all the time, not just when the truck was warm...

Cool

I bought from Ford the dual function "watchamacallit" $77.00. It didn't fix my problem. Pumps everything out of the front tank regardless of which tank I have selected.
