I have a 1973 Ford F100 with a 302. Tranny was missing when I got truck. I purchased a trans. off E-Bay, but it has a short tailshaft with a u-joint type connector instead of a slip-yoke where it slides into trans. What are my options for this? Custom driveshaft? Search for a long tailshaft? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If it's a C4 then it's the right trans depending on your wheelbase length. The '70's F-100 smallblock, "long wheelbase" trucks used a short tailshaft tranny. These trucks used a 2 piece driveshaft with a center bearing (where the two pieces go together). The slip joint is at the junction of the two pieces. The short wheelbase, small block trucks used a standard C4, or C6 (rare with smallblocks, but there were some) with a regular tailhousing/ slipyoke tranny. You should be able to get all the parts from any decent boneyard. I'm not sure about the big blocks.
Does your truck have a short intermediate shaft leading to a center carrier and then the long shaft to the rear axle (that's what my 65 has, that's why I ask). If so, just go to the bone yard and grab an intermediate shaft from a stick shift truck.
No the original driveshaft is a single piece driveshaft. I will have to look for a two piece driveshaft if they even made this in the shortbed pickups or have one custom made I think.
