My 78 has four-sided headlights where two of the sides have a greater length than the other two sides . So does my 79. I'm not sure why, but I like that look better than the circular lights.

I don't, however, like all the smog stuff they did in 79.

I think the word you are looking for is "rectangle."

I like my my '79 tremendously...which is why I've been spending $$$ over the last 2 years rehabilitating it. I've owned it since 1991.

That said, one area that gave me grief was the shifter (3 on the tree). I was constantly having difficulty shifting. I repaired the shift tube in the column and still had problems. Then I _replaced_ the shift tube and continued having problems. I tried several different things and then I paid a pro garage who didn't do much better than me in the long run.

Contributing to the problem was the shift collar, --where the lever goes into the column-- which is just pot metal, and broke at the connection. I replaced that and a couple years went by, then the replacement broke. After the second replacement cracked in the same place I decided to cut a hole in the floor and put a floor shift in. Through trial and error, I finally got it to behave about 95 % of the time.

That's my only real complaint.

If you want to get REAL technical, I don't think it's a TRUE rectangle. The sides are actually curved ever so slightly. I have no idea what THAT shape would be called, though.

By some definitions, what we lovingly call a "blue oval" is not an oval but more of an ellipse. Some define an oval as being egg-shaped where one end is broader than the other.

So does that mean that round headlights aren't square?

I have a 1979 4x4 crew cab. It's an awesome vehicle. The lineup goes like this.. inline 6 300, np435 4 spd, np205 tcase, dana 60 front end, dana 70 rear.. If you do the research on those components, it's gonna outlive me! Put all that in a nice looking, sturdy body and it's a pretty amazing thing.

No it would be very easy to do. If you want to change your grill form a 73-77 to a 78 79(with square head lights), all you need to do is swap the grill and get the headlight surrounds(the plastic ones and the ones the square head lights actually are mounted to).

Oh by the way I have a 79 Bronco that I just love. Great truck. I also have a 77 that I've thought about swaping grills for(79), but since I already have one, I don't need 2, kinda like the difference.

i like the old grill(73-77) the best it gives it a more classic look but the 78/79 steering is so much better.

I've owned 2 1973 model trucks and 2 1975 model trucks. I'm currently driving a 73 swb F100. I've pirated numerous parts from 78 and 79 model trucks to upgrade mine such as cuise, a tilt collum, and intermitant wipers. How exactly is the steering any better on 78's or 79's than the 77 and older other than a different looking collum? I completely rebuilt my front end a couple of years back and added sway bars to the front and rear from a later model truck. My steering is just as good as any from the 73 to 79 era and maybe as good as even a new truck would be.
To answer the original question: I have realy enjoyed the old Fords I've owned. As far as I know everything pretty much interchanges. So anything that you don't like or would like to change is pretty much possible. My truck originaly had a 240 and 3 speed with no options. It now has a 460, C6, traction loc rear end, power breaks, power steering, A/C, cruise control, intermitant wipers, tilt collum, along with several other goodies that were pretty much bolt ons using regular factory parts. I think I have everything a late model truck would have except for power windows, power locks, and fuel injection.

i didnt mean to offend you i was just stating my opinion that i like the 78/79 steering better, every 78/79 i bought had alot slack in the wheel than the 6 73-77's ive owned.
