The Cooper Discovery are good winter tires. I have had two sets of them and enjoyed them very much. On my 05 I have the factory set of BFG All Terrain and last winter they impressed me also.
BFG AT are rated for Extreme Winter Conditions above the regular M + S that allterrain tires typically have. The Cooper Disco M+S has this higher rating too. THe BFG has a lot more size options in its whole range, but I don't know if the offer more in a 17" since my truck sports 16"
I have a set of LT265/70R17 Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT winter tires on the order for my 2005 F-350. They are smaller than the 275/70R18s that came on it, but are the biggest ones that Nokian makes. I had to buy 17" wheels to get them.
I had a set them (LT245/75R16) for my F-150 and they are the most incredible winter tire I have ever seen. They do not slip or spin at all. They come pre-drilled for studs and I had them studded at the tire shop ($12 apiece). They are fairly expensive, but well worth it in my book. I will not drive my truck in the winter without them now. Even with 6" of snow on the ground, I can drive at or above the speed limit without any difference in handling. They are also great on ice. The studs make a big difference in braking. They aren't much louder than stock, but don't handle as well on bare pavement as all-terrain tires. They are so good that I have had a few close calls with being rear-ended by cars behind me who can't brake as good as I can in snowy/icy conditions. I live in northern Maine and this is the most recommended snow tire around.
I paid $641 (including tax) for the four LT245/75R16s to be studded, balanced, and mounted on my F-150. I was quoted at $895 (including tax) for the four LT265/70R17s for my F-350. That is pretty steep, but worth it in my book.
I'll secind Mikedeason's recommendation - that is the Cooper Discoverer M+S. I put a set (studded) on my rig last fall, and they work GREAT! I live and commute from 8000 ft to 4500 ft, so I see alot (like uninterrupted) of snow and ice from Halloween through Memorial Day, and can recommend these.
