I finally ordered my 4.30s today. I have read a lot about the mods others have here and decided that the gear change would be the first real mod to my truck.
I am having the dealer do them. The order was placed this morning and I was told they would be in about 3 days from now.
I thought I was going to get the Banks PowerPack first but, from what I've read here, I'll get a bigger booost from the gears.
I don't post much but, I read a lot. Thanks to you all for helping me make this decision.
You won't be sorry. I have owned two of the SD V-10's with 5 and 6 spd trannys, and I ordered the 4.30 gears in both. I think that rear end ratio should be standard for the V-10 engine option.
Let us know what your impressions are after the install. Many of us would love to or will be getting them at some point down the line so gives us our initial feelings of improvement over the 3.73s and also keep an eye on the gas and be honost if it actually decreases at all. Most of us wouldn't mind a 1/2 mpg or if the additional towing performance is there.
Also Curiously was there a reason for changing other than just something you wanted? do you tow heavy or are you just looking for better acceleration?
I'll be sure to post the results when the job is done.
I am getting them because when we go camping, we are close to the GCVWR with 6 passengers (at 80 lbs, I have to count the dog!) bicylces, firewood, trailer, and other camping gear. I would feel better from a legal standpoint if there were more of a cushion especially since the kids are 10, 9 and 5 and aren't getting smaller.
Also, I live in RI at 33' above sea level so everywhere we go is uphill and this truck downshifts to 2nd a lot more than my GMC did.
The GMC had a 6.0L with the 4.10s. Both are crew cab long beds with 4wd. I'm counting on the gear change to bring this truck to life!!!

Reason: clarify thought
you are going to love them100%. asto to our guy who said they should be stanard i say dito. i could have saved a g note and a gear change from 410's to 56's.
My truck is going in tomorrow for the gear installation. For the record, my last two tanks of gas have neeted me 11.12 and 10.79mpg. Towing, I usually get between 7.0 and 7.5. I will report back on gas mileage when it's available and my first impressions as soon as I get it back.
when the F-450's and F-550's have a 4.56 option, you KNOW they are the MAN for towing big loads. Flipping through my owners manual the tow ratings go UP with every lower gear set that's listed. I'd love 4.10's even, I had to go to a tire size to get up to around 3.90. You may think you're not missing much power having 3.73's and mounting 36" or 37" tires. But oh buddy roe, when you do get back to a stock-ratio with better gears they difference is awesome. Good luck, Ken
