I have a 5.0 with about 150k on it. I have noticed that at low RPMs (around 1500-1800) and when I am under at least a moderate load, there is an occasional misfire. It's not consistent but it is noticeable. If I accelerate and get the tranny to downshift, I don't have the problem. Also no problem if I'm cruising at the same RPMs and under a light load - just lower RPMs and a load.
Other information:
I haul a boat a couple times a month during fishing season (5-10 hours).
Replaced the plugs & wires about 75K miles ago.
Drive about 20K per year.
Haven't checked the plugs or tried pulling any codes.
My initial thought is that the plugs and/or wires could need replacing or the injectors may need cleaning.
75,000 is plenty for plugs since there is a problem go ahead change them out and see what they tell you. all the same or not. maybe the egr is plugging up if equipped and needs a cleaning too. one other thing to try is putting in high octane fuel and see what that does. just a couple of ideas.
I also have a 97 Eddie Bauer with roughly the same issue that Hank has. My problem starte right after BUCKY'S did $700 worth of work replacing my exhaust manifold. What if any solution you might have found worked?
I've had my '97 EB 5.0 for abour 6 years. I've had the "slight missfire" problem and found it to be plugs and wires. I stopped using the original platinum tip plugs since the platinum on the electrode is a small disk about the size of a small pin head and the disk "blows off" leaving a wide gap on some plugs. A fleet manager I know told me about the problem when I was having trouble once not long after a fresh tune-up. He switched all his Fords (several dozen) to standard plugs and just replaces them every 15 -20K. Since I began doing that I've had no more trouble. When you change the wires be sure to take extra care routing them so as not to have parallel runs that can couple and cross fire as well as keeping them clear of the exhaust manifolds.
